Kansas authorities must destroy all electronic copies they made of a small newspaper’s files when police raided its office this month, a judge ordered Tuesday, nearly two weeks after computers and cellphones seized in the search were returned.
The Aug. 11 searches of the Marion County Record’s office and the homes of its publisher and a City Council member have been sharply criticized, putting Marion, a central Kansas town of about 1,900 people, at the center of a debate over the press protections offered by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

The Huron Research Suite will replace WVU+kc (Kuali) for proposal submission, award management, protocol management, conflict of interest and more.

Gov. Josh Green signed anti-vaping legislation into law on Tuesday in an effort to address the growing use of nicotine products, especially among youth in Hawaiʻi.
The measure bans the shipment of tobacco products to non-licensed retailers and official groups electronic cigarettes and vape juices under the definition of “tobacco products.”
It also introduces a 70% exclusive tax on the wholesale price of each electronic smoking product, which could likely increase consumer costs.
The tax will take effect on Jan. 1, 2024. Lawmakers say it is the first step in protecting Hawaiʻi’s youth from the dangers of “Big Tobacco.”

The Communications Security Establishment (CSE), one of the federal agencies tasked with countering foreign interference, is experiencing a “major staffing crisis,” a former CSE spy told Radio-Canada/CBC.
The CSE intercepts and decodes communications of foreign targets that seek to harm Canada. It is also responsible for protecting the federal government’s computer network and advising critical infrastructure operators, such as banks and hospitals, on how to protect themselves against cyberattacks.
